An Autumn Update to the Membership of the Appraisal Institute Hoosier State Chapter
Thus far, 2008 has been one of notable change for the Hoosier State Chapter. Numerous individuals have put forth tireless effort at making this a successful year. In keeping with that hard work, it is a good time to update you on Hoosier State Chapter status and ongoing efforts.
-
Education-Through the hard work and efforts of our Education Chairperson, Mark Rattermann, MAI, SRA, and our Executive Director, Shannon Madden, the Hoosier State Chapter had scheduled over 50 CE and QE offerings for 2008. As of September 30th, the Chapter is showing a notable Education profit for the year. In addition, it is interesting to note that of a total of 581 students, 265 have been members and 316 have been non-members. Therefore, we have seen our education offerings as a primary opportunity for recruitment.
-
Membership Growth-As of September 30, 2008 the Chapter shows an increase of 44 new members for the year which is more than 10%. Overall net membership growth is at 6%. We have disseminated several mailings addressing membership opportunities to both members and non-members informing them of the currently reduced costs coinciding with multiple benefits. In addition, our Sub-Chapter Chairs have held meetings and are striving to engender enthusiasm for joining the Appraisal Institute (AI). Current membership is 354 as of September 29, 2008. At this point in time like no other, we need to grow and strengthen our membership. Our profession is witnessing rapid and profound change. Growing our membership will strengthen our organization and place AI in a position of influence in Washington, DC. Joining the Appraisal institute today is easy and inexpensive. Currently, Associate dues are $295/year and Trainee dues are only $95/year. Both of which, will be prorated for the rest of the year. Special Events-In April, the Chapter sought to increase our visibility with our own statewide NPR Radio sponsorship. Utilizing grants from AI National and Region V, Janice Evans, SRA our Public Relations Chairperson was able to achieve $3,000 worth of radio spots for approximately $1,500. This project has been submitted to National for a Special Events Award.
-
Special Events-The Indianapolis Sub-Chapter/Hoosier State Chapter Annual Golf Outing was held on 07/17/2008 at River Glen Country Club in Fishers, IN. The proceeds, approximately $4,500 were donated to a ?Habitat for Humanity Build? which took place October 2, 2008. Will Fowler, the Indianapolis Sub-Chapter Chair, coordinated the effort and had over 30 Chapter members take place in the actual on site build. High marks to Will for his efforts. Aside from giving back to the community, we anticipate additional earned media exposure.
-
Regional Meeting-Williamsburg, Virginia-This year the Fall Regional Meetings took place in Williamsburg, Virginia on October 18th.
-Immediate Past President Terry Duncan, MAI, SRA gave a presentation on the State of the Appraisal Institute. He reported that we are solid, stable and proactively addressing the dynamic needs of the membership.
-As of 08/31/2008, the Appraisal Institute has 25,400 members nationally, 2,780 of which are new associate members. Currently, total membership is the highest it has been since year-end 1994.
-Nevertheless, Mr. Duncan reported that National is about 20% behind their budget for membership growth. Ergo, the bottom line is being affected as well.
-The OFHEO agreement. At this juncture, the situation has changed due to the takeover of Freddie and Fannie. Karen Pape, MAI the Region V GRC representative, stated that some form of the agreement could become a reality in 2009. What that form will be, yet remains an unknown. We still need to stay tuned. In addition, AI is still working hard to prevent the bonding of appraisers. Though essentially a dead issue for 2008, it still remains a possibility that the issue will resurface in 2009. As such, AI is remaining vigilant in preventing any kind of an appraiser bonding bill becoming a reality.
-The 45 day notice was considered as well. A copy of which is available on the Appraisal Institute web site. Some of the items of interest had to do with the following:
1.
Leadership Development and Nominating Committee (LDNC) is proposed to be bifurcated into committees consisting of Nominating and Leadership Development and Training. Region V voted in favor of the Region V directors supporting this proposal.
2.
Training and Transition for a second Associate Member on Board. The cost of which would be approximately $6,400. It would also require that each chapter have an associate member attend the Region Meetings. For some chapters, this would be a difficult requirement to meet. Region V voted against this proposal.
3.
Continuing Education Requirements for Associate Members. Essentially, it is proposed that Associate Members would be placed on new five year continuing education cycles. A benefit of this requirement would be that Associate Members could then state a certification that they had completed the continuing education requirements of the Appraisal Institute. Region V voted in favor of the Region V directors supporting this proposal.
-The National Board of Directors will vote on these and other items of the 45 day notice at the upcoming November Board Meetings in Austin Texas.
My gratitude is extended to all of the membership; and, special thanks goes out to those who continue to work hard for the Chapter. In particular, I want to thank our Executive Committee, Committee Chairs, Board of Directors and our Executive Director, Shannon Madden.
Respectfully submitted,
Stephen S. Wagner, MAI, SRA
